Let’s face it, unless a diamond is loaded with “fireworks”, (lots of life, fire and brilliance), she just won’t be happy. This article will begin to explain the secret to the ‘fireworks’ show that everyone looks for in a diamond. If you are considering purchasing a diamond or any type of jewelry with a large diamond in it (such as an engagement ring), then you have probably heard the term “The four C’s”.Diamonds can be very costly and you’ll want to get the price possible, so it’s extremely important to educate yourself on the basic quality aspects of how to evaluate one. By doing a small amount of research and educating yourself on the four C’s, you may be able to save yourself a tremendous amount of money while making sure that you are getting the beautiful diamond you truly desire. The four C’s represent four descriptive words for the basic evaluation of diamonds – the four words are: Cut; Color; Clarity and Carat. The first “C” of the four C’s is the word “Cut”.There is actually much confusion when it comes to the “cut” of a diamond. Most people think that when the “cut” is referred to, they mean the “shape” of the stone. The “cut” and “shape” are two completely different things. Diamonds come in many different shapes – here’s a few: Round Brilliant; Princess; Oval; Emerald; Radiant; Pear; Cushion; Asscher and others. The “shape” simply refers to the shape or design of the stone whereas the “cut” indicates how well the diamond was cut and faceted. The “cut” is ranked or graded based on how well the diamond cutter actually cut the stone. Regardless of the shape of a diamond, it will also have a “cut” grade as well. How well a diamond is cut is important – a well cut stone will capture and reflect the light with lots of fire and brilliance. The “fireworks” show that a diamond puts off is the ‘life’ of the stone and this is what everyone looks for – lots of life, fire and brilliance. Whereas a poorly cut stone will not refract the light very well and has a lot less fireworks when it glints the light. Generally, the ’round brilliant’ diamond shape is the one that puts out the best fireworks over the other various shapes.A diamond’s cut is usually graded in the following levels: Poor; Fair; Good; Very Good; Excellent. You will note that different grading companies may offer different definitions and descriptions of their various ‘cut’ grading levels. In any case, generally, the better the cut, the better the fireworks and brilliance of your diamond will be. There are also several other factors that dictate how much fire and brilliance your diamond will project, however, the first place to start is with the cut. There are other things that either aid or detract from the fire and brilliance of your diamond, such as: fluorescence; symmetry; color; clarity; etc. I will be producing future articles on each of these specific areas to help you become more knowledgeable on diamonds and their values.
